Harvard Management Company kept its position in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust unchanged during the second quarter, ending two consecutive periods of reductions. The endowment reported 3.04 million IBIT shares valued at approximately $101.4 million as of 30 June.

The decision marks a pause after significant earlier trimming of its Bitcoin exposure.

The Drivers of This Activity

According to the latest 13F filing, Harvard held exactly 3,044,612 shares of IBIT at the end of the second quarter, matching the share count disclosed three months earlier. The dollar value stood at about $101.4 million, down from the prior quarter primarily because of a decline in the ETF’s price rather than any sale of shares.

The university had previously reduced the position by roughly 21 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025 and by another 43 percent in the first quarter of 2026, bringing it down from a peak of more than 6.8 million shares. No further sales occurred in Q2.

Harvard’s disclosed gold ETF holdings totaled around $171 million, exceeding the Bitcoin position, while it maintained no exposure to spot Ethereum ETFs.

Impact and Broader Context

The decision to hold steady after two quarters of selling suggests the endowment has reached a preferred allocation level for its publicly reported Bitcoin exposure. Institutional observers often view large university endowments as measured, long-term allocators, so the pause in selling may be interpreted as a sign of continued, if cautious, conviction.

Other large holders, including certain Abu Dhabi sovereign funds, also left their IBIT positions unchanged during the period. The broader landscape of institutional Bitcoin ETF ownership continues to evolve with mixed buying and selling activity among banks and hedge funds.

Further quarterly filings will show whether Harvard resumes adjustments or maintains the current stake as Bitcoin market conditions develop.
