Ford Motor Company has issued a major recall affecting approximately 254,000 SUVs due to software glitches that can impair critical driver assistance systems. The recall primarily impacts certain model-year 2022–2025 Explorer, Edge, and Lincoln Nautilus vehicles equipped with Ford’s Co-Pilot360 advanced driver assistance suite.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected vehicles may experience issues where the driver assistance features—including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring—could become disabled or behave unpredictably without warning. In some cases, the systems may fail to activate or may disengage suddenly while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of accidents.

Ford stated that the problem stems from a software error in the vehicle’s central computing module. The company is preparing an over-the-air (OTA) software update for most affected vehicles, which owners can install remotely without visiting a dealership. For vehicles that cannot receive the OTA fix, dealers will perform a free software reflash. Ford has not reported any crashes or injuries directly linked to the issue so far, but the recall was issued proactively after internal testing and customer reports identified the potential safety risk.

This recall adds to the growing list of software-related issues across the auto industry as vehicles become increasingly reliant on complex electronic systems and over-the-air updates. It also highlights the challenges automakers face in ensuring the reliability of advanced driver assistance technologies that are central to the transition toward semi-autonomous and fully autonomous driving.

Owners of the affected Ford and Lincoln SUVs are being notified by mail and can check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on Ford’s recall website or the NHTSA website to see if their vehicle is included and to schedule the free repair or receive the OTA update.
