The French government has announced plans to conduct large-scale testing of quantum-resistant encryption algorithms in 2027, aiming to future-proof critical national infrastructure against emerging quantum computing threats. The initiative, revealed by the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) on June 18, 2026, will focus on real-world deployment trials across government systems, financial networks, and telecommunications.

France intends to evaluate leading post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards recently standardized by NIST, including lattice-based and hash-based algorithms. The 2027 tests will assess performance, interoperability, and security in live environments, with a goal of gradual migration for sensitive public and private sector systems by the early 2030s.

The announcement has drawn close attention from the global cryptocurrency industry. Blockchain networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum rely on elliptic curve cryptography that could potentially be broken by sufficiently powerful quantum computers using Shor’s algorithm. While large-scale quantum machines capable of such attacks remain years away, many experts warn that adversaries could harvest encrypted data today for future decryption.

Crypto projects and wallet providers have already begun exploring quantum-safe signature schemes. France’s proactive stance is viewed as a significant signal that major economies are taking the threat seriously, potentially accelerating adoption of hybrid cryptographic systems in decentralized finance and digital assets.

ANSSI emphasized that the program balances innovation with security, encouraging collaboration with European partners and technology firms. The tests will also inform broader EU strategies on quantum resilience. As nations ramp up quantum investments, the crypto sector is expected to intensify efforts to integrate post-quantum protections to maintain long-term trust and security in decentralized systems.
