Apple is said to be releasing its first foray into the metaverse. A high-end mixed-reality headset, to the public for the first time this spring after years of development.

Soon after Apple’s spring product reveal, the rumored release date for the integrated AR/VR headset, along with new iPhones and other updated Apple gadgets, is expected to come this year. The operating system for the headset is said to be dubbed xrOS, or “Borealis” internally.

Bloomberg claims that the tech giant will debut the hybrid headgear in the coming months. Presumably in advance of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. Apps for the gadget, which may be dubbed the Reality Pro. Are apparently already being developed by a few third-party developers.

More Expensive Than Competitors
The Reality Pro headset is said to cost upwards of $3,000. Making it far more costly than the $1,499 Quest Pro mixed-reality headset recently released by Meta and significantly more than the $399 Quest 2 VR headset aimed at consumers.

That’s a lot of money to spend on wearable gear. But Apple products are often more expensive than their competitors since they have higher quality and more features. The Apple Reality Pro is anticipated to be a robust standalone headgear (no computer or phone necessary) capable of superimposing digital visuals over the user’s real-world view and running complex virtual reality (VR) games and applications.

It’s being hailed as Apple’s boldest step towards the metaverse, the future internet where users interact with avatars in 3D settings. Meta is one of the leading companies working to realize the idea of the metaverse as a bustling center for professional, recreational, gaming, and social activities.
