Tether announced its official support for the SQRIL initiative — a collaborative global effort to create a unified, open standard for QR code-based payments that enables seamless cross-border and cross-network interoperability using stablecoins like USDT.
SQRIL (Secure QR Interoperable Layer) is an industry consortium backed by major payment providers, fintechs, and blockchain players, aiming to solve one of the biggest barriers to stablecoin mass adoption: fragmented QR code systems across countries, apps, and merchants. Currently, QR payments in Asia (WeChat Pay, Alipay), Africa (M-Pesa), Latin America, and emerging markets use incompatible formats, forcing users to rely on multiple wallets or apps. SQRIL proposes a single, open-source QR schema that supports USDT, other stablecoins, fiat on-ramps, and instant settlement via blockchain rails.
Tether’s backing includes technical integration support, co-marketing efforts, and a commitment to prioritize USDT in SQRIL-enabled wallets and merchant terminals. CEO Paolo Ardoino stated: “Interoperable QR payments are the bridge between crypto and everyday commerce. By supporting SQRIL, we’re accelerating USDT’s role as the global digital dollar for remittances, e-commerce, and micropayments — especially in emerging markets where traditional banking is limited.”
The move aligns with Tether’s broader strategy to expand USDT beyond trading into real-world utility: remittances (~$800B+ annual global flow), cross-border B2B payments, and merchant adoption in high-inflation regions. Early SQRIL pilots in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa have shown promising results, with transaction speeds under 2 seconds and fees under $0.01 via USDT on fast chains like Tron and Solana.
If successful, SQRIL could dramatically increase USDT circulation velocity, merchant acceptance, and daily use cases, positioning stablecoins as a true alternative to legacy payment rails like Visa/Mastercard in underserved markets.
The announcement sparked immediate excitement on X starting January 3, 2026, with press releases, QR demo videos, and adoption projections circulating widely, fueling debates on stablecoin utility, global payment standards, emerging market fintech, and Tether’s next growth phase among traders, fintech builders, and payment experts.
