In a fiery escalation of the ongoing browser wars, Google has lashed out at Microsoft, accusing it of using “misleading tactics” to discourage Windows users from choosing Google Chrome. Reports indicate that Microsoft has ramped up efforts to promote its Edge browser by displaying prominent warnings to users attempting to install Chrome on Windows 10 and 11. These alerts, which appear during the Chrome setup process, state, “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft,” encouraging users to “browse safely” with Edge instead.

Microsoft’s strategy to boost Edge’s market share, where Chrome holds a commanding lead with nearly six times the users, includes taskbar pop-ups and new “flags” in pre-release Windows versions, such as “msPinningCampaignChromeUsageGreaterThan90Trigger.” These prompts urge users to pin Edge to their taskbar if Chrome usage exceeds 90%. Google has labeled these moves as “deceptive,” arguing that Microsoft is exploiting its dominance over the Windows ecosystem to unfairly sway user preferences.

In a statement reported by Euro Weekly News, Google condemned Microsoft’s approach, asserting that the warnings falsely imply Chrome is less secure. Both browsers rely on the open-source Chromium engine, ensuring comparable performance and security. Microsoft, however, emphasizes Edge’s deeper Windows integration and its “trusted” brand to attract users.

The controversy has drawn criticism beyond Google. Firefox’s Chief Product Officer, Steve Teixeira, called Microsoft’s tactics anti-competitive, stating, “It’s time for Microsoft to respect user choice.” TechRadar and BGR have also weighed in, with TechRadar labeling the campaign as overreach that risks alienating users. BGR noted that such aggressive prompts might frustrate rather than persuade.

This isn’t the first skirmish between the tech giants. In 2023, a Windows update reportedly disabled Chrome’s one-click default browser feature, prompting Google to restore it. As Microsoft doubles down on promoting Edge, the browser war grows fiercer, leaving users navigating a battleground of corporate agendas. While Microsoft’s tactics aim to chip away at Chrome’s dominance, their success remains uncertain as Google fiercely defends its position.
