The .pi domain auction by Pi Network is gaining traction among its “Pioneers,” sparking curiosity about its practical applications and future trajectory. Launched around Pi Day 2025, the auction allows users to bid on custom .pi domain names, intended to serve as more than mere collectibles. Pi Network envisions these domains as Web3 identities, linking to apps, businesses, or personal projects within its ecosystem, fostering functional digital spaces rather than just speculative assets.

Recent updates have enhanced the auction’s accessibility. It now operates as a standalone Pi app, separate from the Pi Wallet, with a polished interface and a live stats page displaying top bids, trending domains, and highest prices. Email notifications are also on the horizon. However, much of the auction’s momentum comes from domain squatting, with bidders snapping up generic or brand-related names for potential resale, mirroring early Web2 and Ethereum’s ENS trends.

The Pi Core Team has emphasized that .pi domains are meant for building real-world applications, such as e-commerce platforms or blogs, not just hoarding. To support this, they’re developing user-friendly app-building tools and integration features, though these remain unreleased. The auction’s success hinges on whether these domains become active, functional projects rather than just speculative investments.
