Nigeria’s banking giant, GTBank, fell victim to a significant cyberattack on Wednesday night, August 14, 2024. Suspected hackers managed to compromise the bank’s domain address, creating a fraudulent website to steal customer data.

The incident occurred just a day after the domain was renewed for another five years. While the method of attack remains unclear, experts speculate that either the bank’s login credentials were stolen or the domain itself was hijacked.

According to Gazettengr, The phishing attack has raised concerns about GTBank’s cybersecurity measures, particularly the absence of DNSSEC protection, a technology designed to prevent domain hijacking.

Although the bank’s mobile app appears unaffected, the breach has sparked fears of widespread data compromise and potential job losses among GTBank staff. No hacker group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
