App users can exchange their boarding cards for NFT trading cards by simply scanning them. Passengers can earn NFT cards for air travel and redeem them for various benefits. One of Europe’s leading airlines, Lufthansa, has created a new loyalty program on Polygon Network that uses NFTs.
Passengers can earn NFT cards from air travel and redeem them for benefits such as free flights or access to the business class lounge. Lufthansa’s digital innovation arm, the Lufthansa Innovation Hub, and the airline’s frequent flyer Miles and More have collaborated on the Uptrip smartphone app, launched on 31 August.
According to the release, app users can exchange their boarding cards for NFT business cards simply by scanning. To mine and transfer Uptrip NFT, users need to link their crypto wallets in the app. Travelers can earn benefits such as upgrades, access to airport lounges or earn miles by completing certain NFT collections. Internet Banking3 Director of Lufthansa Innovation Center Kristian Weymar stated that Web3 is in its infancy because people are interested but cautious. Weymar emphasized that the goal of the initiative is to provide consumers with easier access to Web3.
Christopher Siegloch, director of program development at Miles and More, says Uptrip has received a lot of attention. More than 20,000 people have signed up and 200,000 NFT trading cards have reportedly been minted. This year, Lufthansa has shown interest in implementing Web3 technology for internal use. Meanwhile, other airlines have also begun to reveal their plans for Web3 deployment. Emirates, the largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, also said it will accept Bitcoin payments and launch NFT payments in early 2022.
