Meta Platforms Inc. is reportedly preparing for a seismic shift in its workforce, with plans to lay off 20% or more of its nearly 79,000 employees. The sweeping cuts, which could affect more than 15,800 workers, were signaled by top executives to senior leadership on March 14, 2026. This move is designed to offset the astronomical costs of Meta’s artificial intelligence ambitions, which include a projected $600 billion investment in data centers by 2028. As capital expenditure for 2026 alone is expected to hit $135 billion, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is once again pivoting toward a “year of efficiency” to keep the company’s financial health intact while chasing AI dominance.
The rationale behind the layoffs is twofold: balancing the books and restructuring for an AI-first era. Zuckerberg has recently alluded to efficiency gains from internal AI tools, noting that “projects that once required large teams can now be handled by a single very talented person.” This shift is hitting departments like Reality Labs, legacy research teams, and middle management the hardest. While Meta is cutting thousands of roles, it is simultaneously offering eye-watering compensation packages—some worth hundreds of millions of dollars—to recruit elite researchers for its new “Superintelligence Labs.” This “quality over quantity” approach reflects a broader trend across Big Tech, as companies like Amazon and Block have also recently slashed headcounts to lean into automation.
Despite the aggressive cost-cutting, Meta’s AI journey remains turbulent. Internal reports suggest the company’s latest foundational model, codenamed “Avocado,” has underperformed in tests for reasoning and coding, leading to a release delay until at least May. With billions committed to hardware and infrastructure, the pressure to prove that AI spending can generate meaningful revenue has never been higher. For investors and employees alike, Meta’s transition from a social media giant to an AI-driven powerhouse is proving to be a high-stakes gamble that requires a leaner, more specialized workforce.
