The FBI has issued a fresh public alert warning cryptocurrency users—particularly those on the Tron network—about a sophisticated new scam wave involving fraudulent “Agency Tokens.” Scammers are impersonating official government or law enforcement “agencies” (often posing as FBI, SEC, IRS, or fictional entities like “Federal Crypto Recovery Agency”) to trick victims into sending funds or approving malicious transactions.

In this scheme, victims typically receive unsolicited messages via Telegram, Discord, email, or even direct wallet notifications claiming their Tron wallet or TRX/USDT holdings have been flagged for suspicious activity, frozen, or linked to illicit funds. The fake “agency” then demands victims connect their wallet to a provided dApp, approve a “verification” or “recovery” smart contract, or send a small “processing fee” in TRX or stablecoins to unlock their assets. Once approved, the malicious contract drains the wallet—often sweeping USDT, TRX, and other tokens on the Tron blockchain due to its low fees and high transaction speed, which makes it an attractive target for mass-drain attacks.

The FBI emphasized that no legitimate U.S. government agency will ever contact citizens via social media, demand cryptocurrency payments, or require wallet connections for “verification.” Official communications come only through verified channels like mail or in-person contact. The warning highlights how scammers exploit fear of asset seizure, especially amid rising regulatory scrutiny and high-profile enforcement actions in crypto.

Tron has become a hotspot for such scams due to its massive stablecoin volume (USDT dominates Tron transfers) and user base in regions with high crypto adoption. Recent blockchain analytics show a spike in drainers and fake approval exploits targeting Tron addresses, with losses mounting into the millions across hundreds of victims in recent months.

This alert serves as a stark reminder: always verify unsolicited contacts, never approve unknown contracts, use hardware wallets for large holdings, and report suspicious activity to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Staying vigilant is critical as scammers evolve tactics to exploit trust in authority figures.
