A massive wave of sophisticated “dust attacks” is sweeping through the Ethereum network, with security researchers at Etherscan reporting a staggering 612% increase in USDT-related address poisoning attempts. Following the Fusaka upgrade on December 3, 2025, which significantly lowered transaction costs, attackers have moved into an “industrialized” phase of operations. In the 90 days post-upgrade, the number of USDT transfers worth less than $0.01 exploded from roughly 4.2 million to nearly 29.9 million. Similar spikes have been recorded for USDC (+473%) and DAI (+470%), signaling a coordinated effort to compromise user privacy and security at scale.

Unlike traditional hacking, “address poisoning” is a social engineering tactic designed to trick you into sending funds to the wrong person. Attackers use automated bots to monitor the blockchain for your legitimate transactions. Once you send a payment, the bot instantly generates a “spoof” address that mimics the first and last characters of the address you just interacted with. They then send a tiny “dust” transfer (often fractions of a cent) to your wallet, ensuring this fake address appears in your recent transaction history. The goal is simple: the next time you go to send funds, you might accidentally copy the attacker’s lookalike address from your history instead of the real one.

The scale of this threat is unprecedented. Historical data shows that between 2022 and 2024, approximately 17 million poisoning attempts targeted 1.3 million users, resulting in confirmed losses exceeding $79.3 million. In 2026, the problem has only intensified due to lower fees making these attacks nearly free for criminals to execute. In some documented cases, a single legitimate transfer triggered up to 13 separate dust transactions from different attackers within minutes, all racing to be the last address you see. To stay safe, security experts recommend using the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), whitelisting trusted addresses, and—most importantly—double-checking every single character of an address before hitting “send.”
