Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, announced a landmark partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to bolster cybersecurity, enhance public education on digital asset security, and combat crypto-related fraud and illicit activities across Africa.

The collaboration supports UNODC’s Strategic Vision for Africa 2030, focusing on proactive measures to protect the continent’s rapidly growing digital economy. Key initiatives include:

  • Specialized training programs for law enforcement and youth on blockchain analytics and safe crypto practices
  • Funding support for organizations aiding victims of human trafficking and cyber fraud
  • Technical expertise from Tether to improve monitoring of illicit flows and strengthen financial oversight frameworks

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the company’s commitment: “We’re leveraging our expertise to help build a safer digital asset ecosystem, particularly in regions vulnerable to exploitation.” UNODC Executive Director Ghada Waly added: “Digital assets are integral to Africa’s transformation, and partnering with Tether allows us to combat illicit activities while promoting progress and sustainability.”

The announcement comes amid Africa’s booming crypto adoption — the third-fastest growing market globally — where stablecoins like USDT account for ~43% of transaction volume but also attract scams and organized crime. The partnership aims to balance innovation with robust protections, potentially serving as a model for other emerging regions.

USDT remained firmly pegged at $1.00, with the news driving positive sentiment across African trading hubs and increased volume on local exchanges.

The story dominated crypto feeds starting January 9, with official announcements, partnership quotes, regional adoption stats, and “responsible growth” discussions flooding timelines. Industry observers and African crypto communities are praising the proactive approach.
