Zcash developers who recently departed the Electric Coin Company (ECC) unveiled CashZ — a new privacy-focused mobile and desktop wallet designed to push shielded transactions to everyday usability while introducing novel features absent from the official ecosystem.
The team, including several long-time contributors to Zcash’s core protocol and wallet development, cited philosophical differences over governance, funding allocation, and development priorities as reasons for their exit from ECC late in 2025. In a detailed launch manifesto posted to X and their new site, they stated: “Privacy shouldn’t be optional or cumbersome — CashZ is built to make fully shielded ZEC transactions the default experience for everyone, without sacrificing performance or compatibility.”
Key CashZ features include:
- One-tap full shielding for all sends and receives
- Built-in lightweight node mode with optional trusted setup removal via upcoming halo-based proofs
- Cross-chain privacy bridges to Monero and select Layer-2s
- Open-source from day one with community governance via a new CashZ Improvement Proposal process
The wallet launched with immediate support for Zcash mainnet and testnet, with early user reports praising faster sync times and cleaner UX compared to existing options. The team emphasized no new token or fundraising — CashZ is purely a non-profit, community-driven wallet project funded through grants and donations.
ZEC price reacted positively, gaining 9% to trade near $78, with trading volume spiking as privacy advocates and former Zcash supporters rotated back in. Community sentiment remains split: some view CashZ as healthy competition driving innovation, while ECC loyalists worry about fragmented development efforts.
