As of December 16, 2025, leading Web3 wallet MetaMask has officially rolled out native Bitcoin (BTC) support, a landmark update that allows users to manage the world’s largest cryptocurrency directly alongside Ethereum, Solana, Monad, and Sei assets. Announced on December 15, this feature eliminates the need for wrapped BTC (like WBTC), enabling seamless buying, swapping, sending, and receiving of native Bitcoin within the app.

Users updating to the latest MetaMask version will automatically generate a Bitcoin address via multichain accounts. Key functionalities include fiat on-ramps for direct BTC purchases (via card, Apple Pay, PayPal, or bank transfer, depending on region), cross-chain swaps with EVM and Solana assets, and on-chain transfers. Initial support covers native SegWit addresses, with Taproot integration coming soon. Bitcoin transactions will appear in the asset list post-confirmation, though they remain slower than EVM or Solana speeds due to network differences.

This launch caps MetaMask’s aggressive 2025 multichain push: Solana arrived in May, Sei in August, and Monad in November. Previously teased in February with a Q3 target, the Bitcoin integration positions MetaMask—boasting over 100-143 million users—as a true universal wallet, bridging ecosystems and reducing fragmentation. Swaps into BTC also earn MetaMask Rewards points under a $30 million program, hinting at upcoming token utility.

The move intensifies competition in the wallet space, potentially accelerating retail BTC adoption and cross-chain DeFi. With more networks slated for 2026, MetaMask is evolving from an Ethereum staple into a comprehensive Web3 gateway.

On X (Twitter), excitement is building rapidly. The hashtag #MetaMask has seen over 1,200 posts in recent hours, fueled by update announcements and user reactions. #Bitcoin paired with MetaMask mentions exceeds 900 posts, highlighting integration hype, while #BTC discussions around the wallet surge with approximately 750 posts, often sharing tutorials and multichain benefits.

This native BTC addition could redefine how millions interact with Bitcoin, fostering greater interoperability in crypto.
