X eliminated several emojis related to cryptocurrencies, such as those for Bitcoin, Cronos (CRO), and Binance Coin (BNB).
The social media platform of Elon Musk, X, has recently caused a stir by removing cryptocurrency-related emojis, including the Bitcoin emoji, which had been in use for over four years.
Numerous sources state that on July 25, X deleted the Bitcoin hashtag emoji and a few other cryptocurrency emojis.
X eliminated several emojis related to cryptocurrencies, such as those for Bitcoin, Cronos (CRO), and Binance Coin (BNB). Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of X, unveiled these emojis in February 2020 to increase exposure and interaction for material about cryptocurrencies.
Eleonor Genova, head of communications at Nexo, highlighted that freedom and expression were key reasons for many adopting Bitcoin. She noted that while the Bitcoin emoji might seem minor, it embodies a significant concept, similar to how the Peace sign symbolized important ideals in history.
Genova emphasized the “urgent need for a universal digital symbol,” now the responsibility of Unicode. She criticized the absence of a Bitcoin emoji, noting it’s unacceptable to have many money-related emojis while Bitcoin, a transformative force, lacks one.
Though it’s yet unknown just how much of an impact, industry analysts have hypothesized that the removal of these emojis might have a detrimental effect on cryptocurrency values. The removal of emojis coincides with the Nashville Bitcoin 2024 conference, which has garnered special attention for its timing.
The Bitcoin 2024 conference, starting July 25, 2024, features Donald Trump and coincides with the emoji removal, fueling speculation about the change’s motivations.
X also removed the MAGA (TRUMP) emoji, introduced on July 18, 2024, after a shooting incident involving Trump. This has intensified discussions about the platform’s recent changes.
The removal of cryptocurrency emojis from X has stirred debate within the crypto community. The timing, coinciding with the Bitcoin 2024 conference and the removal of political emojis, has fueled speculation and criticism. Discussions continue about the impact on crypto visibility and digital symbols.
